How to Become a Teacher in South Carolina

To become a teacher in South Carolina with American Board’s teacher certification program, candidates will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Prepare for and pass American Board’s required pedagogy and subject area exams.
  2. Receive your American Board Certificate and apply for a Statement of Eligibility from South Carolina Department of Education (Office of Educator Services).*
  1. Obtain an offer of employment from a South Carolina public school, and apply for your South Carolina Alternative Route License with the Office of Educator Services.
  2. Teach for 3 years in a public or charter school while completing your district’s inductive and sumzmative evaluation requirements.
  3. Pass the state-required Praxis exam, the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT).
  4. Advance to your South Carolina Professional License and enjoy your career in teaching.

 

* Once an American Board Statement of Eligibility has been obtained from the South Carolina Department of Education, a candidate may seek employment as a classroom teacher only in the certification content areaAmerican Board candidates in SC may certify in only one content area. After a professional certificate has been obtained, additional subject areas may be added per South Carolina’s Guidelines and Requirements for Adding Certification Fields and Endorsements.
