HOW TO TEACH IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Private schools often seek individuals certified through an education program such as ours. The American Board, also known as The American Board for the Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), offers a flexible, affordable path to earn your teaching certificate. You can complete our self-paced program online without quitting your job or taking additional college courses.

 HOW IT WORKS

To use a teaching certificate from the American Board in a private school, regardless of location, candidates will need to complete the following steps:

1. Contact the school you wish to teach at. Confirm that they accept the American Board certification program in the subject area in which you would like to teach.

2. Inquire if the school of your choice will have an opening for you. It’s much better to have this information before you spend 10 months working on your ABCTE certification, especially if the school does not have any openings.

3. Complete the ABCTE program.

4. Secure a job in the school of your choice and begin teaching.

WHERE CAN YOU TEACH WITH THE AMERICAN BOARD?

When it comes to private schools, the American Board certification can be used in any state. Each private school makes its own rules on which certifications they accept for their candidates.

Having an American Board certification will show that you are highly qualified to teach under the No Child Left Behind act, especially as our certification covers both the Principals of Teaching Knowledge and the subject area of your choice.

We highly recommend that you contact the school you wish to teach in before you begin our program to ensure they accept our certification.

TEACHING PUBLIC AFTER TEACHING PRIVATE

It is possible to teach in public schools in one of the 11 states listed below after teaching in private schools with an American Board certification.

The American Board is currently an accepted certification in public schools in the following states:

Arkansas
Florida
Idaho
Mississippi
Missouri
New Hampshire
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Tennessee
Utah

HOWEVER, each state has its own requirements on how to earn your temporary teaching license for public/charter schools after completing our program. Many states have time limits on how long after completing the American Board program a candidate has to secure their temporary teaching license and begin teaching. Also, keep in mind that not all subject area certifications are accepted in each state.

We highly recommend you contact your state’s department of education for more information on how to teach on an American Board certification in public schools after teaching in private schools.
