...but of course, do not know about the essay portion.

As for advice, unlike the history tests I have taken with ABCTE, I have very little that will be of help. This was truly a most difficult test that measured less retained information and more innate intelligence (in my opinion). Hence, I feel I was INCREDIBLY lucky, considering I am a buffoon. :)

Nevertheless, if I can pass it, anyone can. On the practice exam the day before, I received a 246, and thus did not pass. I was squirming in my chair, to say the least. However, I kept with the practice tests, my peripheral study material (Bloom's Taxonomy, etc.), and more or less geared my thinking to the type of thinking necessary for this test. On the final test, I received a 323.

You really have to IMAGINE the scenarios posted on the test. I can't give you more than that because then I will be giving you the questions. :)

Needless to say, as in the examples in the practice test, if it says the BEST answer or asks for the MOST of something, make SURE it's the best or most. I had to review nearly all of the questions so that on the second time through I could reread the question. There were several that I had wrong the first time.

OK...so now I am waiting on the essay. I am confident I do not have a one or a two. Beyond that, the examples listed are of little comfort. The difference between a 4 and 5 in the examples is negligible, since both are passing. SO NOW I SIT HERE STRESSED THAT I GOT A THREE!

Anyone else want to share their anxiety at this point in the process for them? What is it, three weeks before results? Sort of makes discovering you passed the multiple choice a little less, um, exciting. The thought of taking this puppy again is enough to make me want to eat glass.

The one book that helped me more than anything else was "The First Days of Teaching". It is the best book regarding pedagogy and how to/what to/why to do everything with teaching that I have ever read. Good Luck!

I admit, I am at the point of wanting to vent and writing a response on this forum will make me feel better. I took the test on June 15th and still have not received news on my Essay score. I plan to write a more official letter later this afternoon, but I wanted to see how long some of the rest of you had to wait for your Essays to be scored. Obviously the number of horror stories about people getting 3’s does have an effect on me.

I have some experience writing and admit to not practicing as much as I could have. I was finished with the main portion of the test with a half hour to spare, but instead of getting up from my cubicle to let me eyes rest I went over all the questions, not just the ones I marked for review, and I regretted it. I only changed one or two of my answers but I would have been in much better shape if I had gone to the bathroom just to let my eyes rest.

Now I have two thoughts bouncing around inside my head. One says that if I fail I can retake the test easy enough and make sure to get the break I need between the multiple choice and essay portion of the test. The other thought is that someone is working under a backlog of tests and I have to pray they are having a good day when they finally get to my test.

The ABCTE program is a great deal better then a similar certification program was part of in Wisconsin so a small delay in getting my test score back is not a deal breaker for me. Ultimately I just don’t like being in limbo and want to move forward to my next test. Well, that is enough venting for me, I feel better and I thank you all letting me share my thoughts.

PS: As nice as it would be to get a copy of our Essay, and the reasons for how it is scored. I can see how it would open Pandora’s box trying to do it.

PPS: Yes, I look at writing this as practice incase I need to retake the test.

PPPS: Looks like Sara answered the 'how long it takes' question. When I took the test I was lead to believe it would be around 2 weeks to have the Essay scored. If it takes 6 weeks to find out if I failed or not, and then I retake the test and have to wait another 6 weeks… ouch. I could have planned better had I known this earlier. Well moving forward…

It took one month for my score (3) to appear on mypass. I took the test 6/6, and found out 7/3. I STILL have not received the official score in the mail. I have received emails from the retake advisor. Had I found out from her that I needed a retake, rather than finding out from MyPass, I would've been p.o.ed. The sadest part is that the retake advisor is so overwhelmend with advising we poor failing lot, I have to wait 2 weeks for her services.

swick:

The writing component is manually scored by an outside assessment company; typically, it takes 3-4 weeks for the score to be received and processed. However, in rare instances, the score can take up to six weeks to be processed, based on volume.

Why Do People Fail Essay?

I am interested to know how many of you think your problem on the essay test was writing ability vs. content knowledge. I have not yet taken the test myself. I'd like to think that if I know enough to pass the multiple choice (that's a really BIG IF!) I should know enough to adequately answer the essay, unless I overestimate my writing ability. Comments, please?

That is what many of "us" thought; however, the PTK essay has NOTHING to do with content knowledge. Some people pass the essay and fail the m/c. Others score exceedingly high on the m/c and fail the essay even though they are skilled writers.
At least two candidates scored a "5" on the ELA essay, but failed the PTK essay. Still others have passed the PTK essay and failed the ELA essay. It is a quandry.
It is a timed test which is subjectively and holistically scored. (Your essay is good enough on ALL levels or it isn't.) There are many things that factor into a test-taker's failure. In addition, you have to write in a tiny little text box without your typical editiorial aids.

Hello, I am a third person to add to the group that got a 5 on the ELA, but a 3 on the PTK. This type of writing is different than you would use with the ELA prompts. I needed more practice and a quieter testing center (construction in the building - South St. Louis County, Missouri center).

Update: After studying and practicing all the example prompts I could find (some more that once), I felt very ready to finally pass the PTK. Although I never could get a re-take counseling I felt very confident with the essay I wrote. I have even mentioned in interviews that I am just waiting for my score. After all, I got a 372 on the multiple choice without additional studying. I used all my time practicing the essay prompts I found on site. I even made up several.

I wrote a simple, 5 paragraph essay. Introduction, body, conclusion. I addressed the 3 issues that were mentioned in the prompt. I had 20 minutes to proofread.

Imagine my horror and shame when I saw a 3 on MyPass today. I refreshed a few times... Yes, a 3.

I went to the Writing Component area and checked the 3 rubric. I am flabbergasted. That is a world apart from what I wrote. This score is just incomprehensible to me. Shall I re-score or chance a re-take?

I posted earlier in this forum and had not passed the essay portion. I'm happy to report I completed a retake exam after speaking with an advisor and just found out that I passed!!! I'm super excited and I wanted to encourage everyone to not give up! I was really discouraged after trying so hard and coming short but it pays to keep trying!! Good luck, you'll be in my prayers!

Dawn, I think I can share this w/o divulging too much. One major problem on my essay is that my tone was too informal--I used the term "kids" when "students" would have been a better choice. Also, my details weren't spread around evenly enough--though I answered all parts of the question, and gave supporting details for all of them, there were too many loaded onto one part of the question. So, write like a textbook, no matter whom your memo is directed to, and make sure you're evenly balanced, and make everything else perfect, and you should pass. Still waiting, but it's only been a little over 2 weeks. I'll get back on and let you all know.

Having passed the multiple choice PTK, my best advice is to know the content of the Prepare to Teach workshops backward and forward, and read all you can about applying the concepts in Bloom's Taxonomy. Really understand the hierarchy and read as many resources as you can about it. Also, taking a lot of time with the explanations to answers in the practice exams will help. Good luck!

" The thought of taking this puppy again is enough to make me want to eat glass."
How I love the way you phrased that. I didn't pass on my first try due to the essay either. I'm now waiting on my results for the retake, and I'm a whole lot less confident than I was the first time. After I flunked the essay portion the first time, I reviewed the rubric and writing samples for each level, and all I have to say is that I know I didn't write that poorly. I followed all of the advice given on the phone for my retake, so here's hoping I passed this time. Good luck to the rest of you too.

Nice to see someone who has been through what I'm dealing with right now. I have not yet received my phone call about retake advice, but I just cannot fathom that my writing was that far from the 5 & 6 examples that I studied. It really makes me question the scoring process and I hate that I cannot view my essay again to see exactly what was wrong. It just doesn't make sense to me. Good luck!

Sorry, that you have to go through the waiting period again. :(

How long did it take to get your results the first time?

kvollrath,

Read the questions carefully.
Make sure that you choose the BEST answer, not just the first one that looks right.
Answer all of the questions.
If you get stuck: choose an aswer AND mark it for review (check the box and go back to it when you finsh).
On the essay question: Good luck!

While I agree that spell check is part of our everyday life, I do believe that we have not come that far where there is spell check on a blackboard! :)

I remember in grade school that if a student ever found a word on the chalkboard that was misspelled and told the teacher, then that student would get an extra point on the next test.

Good luck and just make sure you proofread!

Chris,
Teachers do not usually write on blackboards/whiteboards because it is a BAD teaching practice to turn your back to the students.

We use Power Point, Key Note, or Smart Board Presentations that captivate interest.

In the event that we do write on the board, it is in advance (without kids in the room), and we can use a handheld spell checker (I have one on my phone) or a dictionary.

Wish I lived in that dreamland. Reality is that not all schools are fortunate enough to be so updated. Whiteboards and chalkboards are still very common in my rural district. I'm pretty sure there is some kind of saying about making the best with the tools at hand, but I can't remember how it goes at the moment...

On a side note, most of the schools in my district use Smartboards, which are equipped with spell check. Additionally, when preparing a lecture, I outline the important points on whatever word processing program is available, before class begins.
My point is that I am fully aware of my writing weakness and my writing strengths and with preparation can compensate. In my opinion, a test for professional ability, should focus on whether the candidate is able utilize technology and/or to locate and disseminate desired information quickly and effectively. By removing the necessity for mindless memorization, tests may be constructed that provide a greater opportunity for the demonstration of ability.

DS (not verified)

KW,

I agree with the fact that we do use modern technology in preparing our lessons in advance. This definitely allows us to compensate for our individual weaknesses. However, education is not just about disseminating information quickly and effectively. That would just be a speech and teaching is much more than lecturing. We must have useful knowledge of proper pedagogical practices to ensure that active learning will take place in our classrooms.

I am not sure of what you meant by mindless memorization. Maybe you meant memorizing how to spell certain words. That is definitely necessary for the written portion.

To clarify for others: I found no need or requirement for any "mindless memorization," - just a need for basic reasoning skills, pedagogy, and content knowledge.

The dissemination of information quickly and effectively is one of the primary goals of teaching. Your concerns seem to form from assumptions over the terms quickly and effectively. I adhere to Direct Teaching, and while lecture and lecture with discussion is integral to that method; it is not the only option available. (I neither currently practice nor have the desire to instruct small children)

Regardless of the teaching method or style, in this the age of standardize testing, specific, timed, definable, goals exist for teachers and students. It is therefore paramount that teaching methods provide the needed information quickly, to remain within prescribed time constraints, and effectively, in a manner that provides the greatest opportunity for assimilation.

While the aforementioned is fascinating, it is irrelevant to the intended purpose of my previous post. I was using this discussion as another avenue to suggest that spelling, which appears to have caused many, including myself, difficulty on the PTK examination, be given less credence in terms of score.

Read the number of posts discussing the essay examination, the overwhelming advice is to write simply, use small words, keep it short, etc. There are posts from individuals who claim advanced degrees and many hours, if not years, of instructional experience, facing possible dismissal from this program without good cause. Examinations used to determine comprehension, should be designed to test practical application. From reading the many posts on this website and from my personal experience, the essay portion of the PTK examination appears to be designed to test efficiency at taking the PTK essay examination. Those with the good fortune to have experience with this testing method progress, and those without have three chances, regardless of previous or practical demonstrations of teaching ability.

There will never exist a time, that I compose a formal letter or memo to a parent, supervisor, or peer, without using some method of spell check (computer or book based) and neither would the vast majority (if not all) of fellow professionals; therefore, the adherence to strict spelling, so much so, that even a few misspelled words can mean failure, lacks foundation.

If I am misstating the importance of spelling/grammar on the PTK examination, then there must be an investigation into this scoring method, as I fully aware of how to write.

I understand that modern technology can help correct documents that are written by teachers. What I'm having trouble understanding is how teachers who can not spell are going to be able to correct spelling errors on papers produced by their students. Don't teachers still correct spelling on papers like they did when I was in school?

Unless you are going to scan in every paper students write and have a spell checker available to review them, I think teachers need to be able to correct spelling errors on their own. Am I missing something here?

kwmason,

Spelling is a valid concern for many; I have posted about that myself. Therefore, I did not disagree that the written test needs some tweaking.

I was concerned that someone would read your post and assume that "mindless memorization" meant countless hours spent committing trivial details to memory. That is all.

Good luck!

I took the test last week and passed the first part and now await the grading of the Essay. I'm normally a good writer, not perfect, but in all my practice ones I was a solid 4-5.

I finished the test with about 30 minutes, it took me 10 minutes to go back to the question I marked for 'review' and I should have spent the next 20 minutes relaxing and not looking at the computer screen.

Instead I started going through the rest of the questions and made few if any changes. Time management, sometimes a small break is a valued thing.

Good Luck or all those who are still waiting!!!

I am scheduled for the PTK test on Friday morning and am beginning to panic! I felt confident about the ELA essay test that I took on the 15th, but after reading some posts in regard to the essay scoring, I too am living in fear of a 3! I was kind of hoping that the PTK would be a bit easier, but I am wondering if that is the case.

Good luck Lloydbuckley, sullikis, rthaushalter, yeddin, and others!

Let us know when you get your essay results.
If you have received your essay scores, how many weeks did it take?

Personally, I FELT (still awaiting results) that the written portion of the PTK was easier than the ELA.
Did anyone else find that to be true?

Beware!! I too FELT that the PTK essay was easier compared to my English essay. I was convinced that I had failed my English essay because it was such a poor piece of writing on my part, but to my surprise I passed. However, leaving the PTK exam I felt extremely confident that I scored at least a 4 or higher. I was very familiar with the topic at hand and also used bullets, like in the level 6 example. I felt my writing was very clear and organized. To my utter shock and dismay I opened my score results 2 days ago to see a 3 on my essay. I truly don't understand how that is possible, considering how awful my English essay was and it passed. It's very frustrating. Just goes to show that you can't know what kind of score to expect. Best of luck to you all!
